D an area of 58,000 ha National Park Talassemtane covers the eastern end of the limestone ridge that shapes much of the mountainous Rif. This region offers landscapes of rare quality where the stone and tree, rock and forest, huge views and deep gorges combine closely.
The park contains the only Moroccan fir, last seen a ecosystem unique in the world and now threatened with extinction. These pine forests are the heart of the Central Park area, which covers 3000 ha. There are over 1,380 plant species throughout the park, including a large number of endemics as the tree of Morocco and the pine. The park is a refuge of choice for more than 35 species of mammals including the best known is the macaque, which frequent the many caves scattered in the mountains. Birdlife is very rich with over 100 recorded species, including some iconic as the Golden Eagle.
Located in the heart of the country and against the Jbala City of Chefchaouen, the area encompassing the PNTL 25,000 inhabitants, slightly less than 5% of the population of the province of Chefchaouen. The Jbala, literally highlanders, are distinguished by their dress, their linguistic, architectural techniques and their farming practices. The Park offers a rich historical and religious importance, illustrated by the shrine of Moulay Abdeslam Ben Mchich or Zaouia Si Abdeslam ibn Raissouni.
The PNTL space spread over 6 rural communes (CR) and 3 municipalities in Chefchaouen to Tetouan who are affected in different ways, 2 CR, covering the largest part. The main urban centers frame the PNTL are Chefchaouen (nearly 50,000 inhab.) Taza Bab Bou and Hmed. The current growth of coastal settlements has potential to rapid urbanization of the coast with development centers like Oued Lau.
