Tours , ancienne capitale du peuple gaulois les Turones, est devenue, vers 20 avant Jésus-Christ, une ville gallo-romaine sous le nom de Caesarodunum (la colline de César). En 374, la cité est la métropole de la province romaine de la Troisième Lyonnaise. Ses habitants sont appelés les Tourangeaux et les Tourangelles.

The former abbey church of Saint-Julien is a Gothic building of the 13th century. It has retained its Romanesque bell tower of the 12th century. It comprises a nave of five bays, a transept vaulting ribs, a choir with flat bed, double side and two five-sided apses (16th century).
